Equality Vines: Wines for a Cause

by JP Bacchus

What if the wine you’re drinking was more than a refreshment in your glass? What if it made a statement…made a difference? At DCanter, we are proud to partner with Equality Vines, the world’s first cause wine portfolio, to bring you delicious wines from talented winemakers and to help fund the fight for equality for all.

The Equality Vines co-founders are Matt Grove and Jim Obergefell. Matt launched a sustainable wine company producing wines from South Africa in 2014, and later built on that success to found Equality Vines. Jim combines his love for wine and his activism—he was the lead plaintiff in the Supreme Court’s 2015 case, Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage throughout the United States—to help spread the spirit of equality for all.

Together, Matt and Jim collaborate with talented winemakers to bring you a delicious collection of limited-release, premium wines that benefit organizations working toward equality for all.

Love Wins Sparkling Blanc de Blancs (Sonoma County, California)

A light and crisp sparkling wine (100% Chardonnay) with aromas of green apple and notes of pineapple and brioche, it finishes with light, lingering tropical flavors that beg for another sip. Proceeds from sales benefit Raise A Child, an organization that has been helping children and youth in foster care by recruiting, educating, and supporting adults interested in fostering and fostering-to-adopt. Love wins all around when you pick up a bottle to enjoy on its own or with light appetizers.

Choice Sauvignon Blanc (Russian River Valley, California)

This California Sauvignon Blanc has pronounced aromas of gooseberry and lemongrass with a weightier palate than you might expect. Medium-bodied with ripe melon and citrus fruits, this fresh and fabulous wine is a perfect pairing for a sunny day with friends or a creamy seafood pasta. A portion of the proceeds from this wine goes to support organizations fighting for women’s reproductive rights.

“Get Your Own Damn Coffee” Chardonnay (Russian River Valley, California)

With aromas of ginger and citrus fruit, this medium-bodied Chardonnay has hints of oak aging (mmm…vanilla…). A portion of proceeds from this wine go towards The Marilyn Schultz Memorial Endowed Scholarship at St. Edward's University in Austin, TX, to support pay equality in the workplace. So get your own d@#% bottle and support this cause!

Rosé The Riveter (Dry Creek Valley, California)

A quintessential summertime rosé (100% Pinot Noir) with aromas of wild strawberry, rose petal, and melon. Zesty, bright, and refreshing, a portion of each purchase of Rosé the Riveter is donated to the YWCA to help empower women and eliminate racism. Roll up your sleeves and enjoy this rosé on its own or pair it with summer pasta salads or a light fish or poultry dish.

The Decision Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley, California)

This 2018 vintage from Russian River Valley is medium-bodied with alluring aromas of ripe red cherry, blackberry, sweet cinnamon, and clove. This oak-influenced Pinot Noir has a warm, pleasant finish, leaving hints of vanilla and baking spices lingering on your palate, and can be paired with foods that show off rich flavors (mushroom risotto, smoked salmon). Purchase of this wine benefits Lambda Legal, the oldest and largest national legal organization dedicated to defending the rights of LGBTQ+ people. The Decision you’ll have to make is whether to share this wine with friends or enjoy it all by yourself!

The Activist Red Blend (Sonoma, California)

Pour a glass of this Grenache, Zinfandel, Cinsault, and Carignan blend, and discover aromas and flavors of warm vanilla spice and rich, red fruits. A full-bodied and floral wine, proceeds from The Activist benefit the Looking Out Foundation and their efforts to empower those without a voice. This Rhône-inspired blend may just inspire you to become an activist, striving to bring about political or social change wherever you are.
